Northampton Borough Council has been criticised for not doing more to stop a lay-by on a main road from becoming a fly-tipping hotspot.

A toilet, a sofa, a mattress, a child's car seat and lots of other rubbish remains at the lay-by on the A4500 westbound in Upton having been dumped at least 11 days ago.

Duston resident John Wright, who has been reporting fly-tipping at the lay-by to the authorities for years, believes it should be removed quicker.

"It's a shocker - I complained to the MP who in the past has put some pressure on to get it sorted but not this time and it's actually worse," he told the Chronicle & Echo.

"You can see it from the road in Upton, some councillors must have seen it but they don't do anything about it.

"It's not like it's hidden, there are just piles of it. I go past it every day and it gets up my nose every day."

Mr Wright first noticed the fly-tipping on September 19, but it is still there with more added to it - despite a sign reading 'Keep Northamptonshire Tidy, please take your litter home'.

The same issue happened over Christmas and the retired civil servant claims he has reported it to the council many more times over the years.

A council spokesperson said the rubbish been logged for clearance by its contractor as a result of the Chron's approach and urged residents to report issues here.
