Sean McGrath, who lives less than a mile away from the store, said he understands the need to get the work done while the store is quiet but he asks at what cost to the community.

He said: "It was going on to 1.30am on Sunday morning and it sounded like an aeroplane was taking off, and then the angle grinders would kick in.

"My wife got so frustrated she she jumped in the car and drove down to twice and they said to her 'it will be finishing soon' but one-and-a-half-hours later she went back again.

"There was no letters stuck through doors to say any of this was happening, it showed a complete lack of respect."

On Sunday, days after Sean's two young children had gone back to school, the deafening works recommenced at 4pm before stopping at 11.30pm.

He added: "It's just a little annoying at that time of night as we have a young family and there's nothing we could do about it.

"The duty manager at the supermarket said they did not know that they were going to be working that late. After a summer of COVID and anxiety the children had a weekend of lack of sleep and disturbance, which is just unhelpful."

Northampton Borough Council has said they are investigating the incident after recieving a number of complaints over the weekend while a spokeswoman for Morrisons has said the store regrets any disturbance over the past week and the work has now been completed.
