The ring has now been sold for £13,300.

The jewel, a solitaire brilliant cut diamond measuring 4.51ct, VSI, colour T-U, was brought in to a valuation day at Cold Higham village Hall.

Charles Hanson, Manager of Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers said: “One never knows what is going to come out of a shopping bag or cardboard box at these valuation days in Northamptonshire. It is certainly true that we have had some amazing finds in the past here. On this occasion the client came in and said they had a diamond they would like to show us. The little blue box gingerly opened to reveal the brilliance of the diamond ring inside. It was just gleaming in the sunlight.”
