Young children may have taken live bullets home, warn police, after discovery near Northampton

A child who found a live bullet while playing in Northampton prompted police to issue a search for any other children that may have taken home other bullets.

On Saturday, Northamptonshire Police asked parents and guardians to find out if their child was playing in Bushland Road, Abington, on Thursday, March 17.

A spokesman said the appeal came after a bullet was handed to a police officer by a woman whose grandson found it near to the Bushland Road Co-Op.

The youngster had been playing with other children and it is believed they may also have taken bullets home, he said.

Speaking earlier on Saturday Sergeant Wyn Hughes, said: “We have checked the bullet that was handed in to us and it is live, which means it is likely that any other bullets taken home by other children will also be live.

“We are making enquiries to identify the other children who were in Bushland Road on Thursday, as well as conducting patrols in the area.

“I want any parent or guardian who has a child who was in Bushland Road on Thursday to speak to them and ask if they saw any bullets, or if they took any home.

“Live ammunition can be incredibly dangerous and anyone who finds a bullet should call 101 to report it to us, so we can make arrangements to collect it.”

On Saturday night, police said they had traced all children who may have had a live bullet but they were still appealing for any information about the bullets.
