'You don't have a choice': Judge scolds Northampton sex offender who breached harm prevention order

A Northampton sex offender who deliberately did not bother to tell police where he was sleeping and then tried to cover it up has been returned to jail.

Myles Winfarrah, of no fixed abode, was jailed for 13 months in August 2019, where he was committed to the sex offenders' register for 10 years and handed a restraining order against a woman.

But at Northampton Crown Court yesterday (March 9), the 22-year-old was returned to prison for failing on three occasions to tell police where he was staying, which he required to by law.

"You don't have a choice," Her Honour Judge Adrienne Lucking told him in sentencing. "You have to comply with your order, and if you continue to fail then the sentences will get longer and longer."

During the hearing yesterday - in which Winfarrah appeared via live video link - the judge scolded the 22-year-old when he appeared to smirk while a report was read that he "has trouble with supervision".

"I can see the defendant finds this all very amusing," said Judge Lucking.

The court heard Winfarrah had moved between homes and a hostel on three occasions across November and February, and lied about the dates he had moved on two occasions when questioned by police.

He was arrested on February 4 from a room at a hostel, where he had reportedly not notified police he would be staying.

He was jailed for 32 weeks.

Offenders who sign the sex offenders register are required to inform the police about changes in address and where they are staying.
