The victim, a man in his 20s, was approached by another man between 6.30pm and 6.45pm as he walked across the playing fields behind Kettering Buccleuch Academy.

The would-be robber demanded the man handed over his phone and assaulted him when his victim refused.

Police said the victim fought back only for the attacker to pull out a knife and start waving it around, before slashing the man’s coat.

A police spokesman said: "He then attempted to stab the man in his leg, but he managed to deflect the blow and the offender ran off towards Brambleside.
