Between four and five boys with scarves across their faces turned up and started smashing the windows of the car with a black pole.

The victim managed to drive away from them and suffered a laceration to the back of her head along with cuts caused by the shattering of glass, requiring stitches.

Reports circulated on social media have said that the gang also had weapons including a gun but a police spokesman could not confirm these at this stage.

The spokesman said the main attacker, who carried the pole, was a mixed race boy wearing grey joggers and a puffer jacket.

They said: "The rest of the males are described as white and aged 15 to 17."

The spokesman added that the other two women in the car were not injured but left shaken.
