Here's a op tip for making those essential car journeys during the lockdown .. do NOT overtake Northamptonshire's top cop at 105mph!

Chief Constable Nick Adderley was on his way to work at the force's Wootton Hall HQ when the white VW Golf sped past on the A45.

So he switched on the blues and twos in his unmarked BMW and hauled over the unsuspecting driver, who now faces a maximum £900 fine.

Mr Adderley recently warned drivers were using the county's empty roads like racetracks during the caronavirus lockdown and police revealed last week one 'Covidiot' was zapped doing an eye-watering 138mph on a motorway in Northamptonshire.

He said: "There seems to be an attitude of ‘empty road, go like stink but lockdown does not equal lawlessness or a free for all on the roads."

"I've had emails from members of the public complaining that our camera safety vans are still deploying to key locations and accident hot spots and that our officers are still patrolling the roads.

"My stock answer to them all is simple really: Don’t speed, don’t drive recklessly and you won’t need to worry about the camera safety vans or patrolling officers."

Mr Adderley has said that road policing is "every officer's responsibility" and this is not the first time he has collared a speeding motorist in Northamptonshire since he took over the top job in 2018.

Last May he posted video on social media of a mum with toddler in her car clocking an astonishing 122mph in Northampton.

And in November 2019 a red-faced driver who was pulled over told him: "sorry, I thought you wanted to race".
