Alert staff spotted him passing the bottles — and the card — to a woman and chased the pair after they left without paying.

But the shopworkers fled after the woman turned and threatened to stab them.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman revealed: "Two members of staff chased the pair out onto the High Street, causing them to stop running outside the public toilets.

"There, the woman produced a knife and thrust it at the staff members while threatening to stab them."

The thieves headed off Station Road and into William Road.
