Teenage boy banned from retail premises in Northampton - unless with parent - following persistent shoplifting and anti-social behaviour

A teenage boy has been banned from attending any retail premises in Northampton, unless he is with a parent or guardian, following persistent shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was issued with a two-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) at Wellingborough Youth Court on December 23 last year.

According to police, he was first issued with acceptable behaviour contracts in April 2024. He was then made subject of an anti-social behaviour injunction, but following multiple breaches and persistent offending West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) and the Northampton Neighbourhood Policing Team collated evidence to successfully secure the CBO.

This criminal behaviour order states the boy must not:

  • Enter the area of Clannell Road, Tesco Extra or surrounding area, unless in the presence of his parent or a guardian
  • Enter any retail premises in Northampton, including car parks, unless in the presence of his parent or a guardian
  • Be in a group of three or more (including him) unless there is an adult over the age of 25 years present
  • Be in company with, nor associate with three named persons in any public place

If the boy fails to comply with the CBO, he risks being arrested and prosecuted further.

Sergeant Gary Liddle of Northampton Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Working with our partner agencies, we are pleased to have successfully obtained this CBO for this boy, who has shown absolutely no regard for the law or others.

“We want to make our retail areas a safer space and tackling anti-social behaviour is one element of that. Individuals like this boy have a negative impact on the daily lives of those who work or come to visit the town.

“We have exhausted all other avenues to try and tackle his poor behaviour and we simply cannot let this continue, which is why we have now got this order in place, to help protect our businesses and communities.

Councillor Charlie Hastie, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at WNC added: “By working together, we have been able to address persistent anti-social behaviour and support those affected by it. We will continue to collaborate closely with our policing colleagues, local businesses and residents to ensure West Northants remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.”
