An unmarked police car teamed up with an ANPR-equipped vehicle to pincer the getaway vehicle — a white Renault Kangoo — and stop it escaping.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman revealed: "Two men were spotted apparently stealing oil at The Turnpike, on the A45 at Harpole, at around 2.15am.

"We deployed and followed the vehicle onto the M1 before we stopped it at the Watford Services and arrested two men aged 20 and 29. Both are in custody at this time."

A tweet posted by the Road Crime Team claimed the pair were seen breaking into the pub before leaving the scene.
