Speed cameras snap van driver three times in 15 days on M1 near Northampton

A van driver obliterated his clean licence when he snapped speeding on the M1 near Northampton three times in just 15 days.

Northampton Magistrates' Court heard how average speed cameras clocked Kevin Saunderson’s white Citroen Relay at around 70mph near junction 15 — between eight and 11mph over the temporary speed limit.

Court documents showed Saunderson, 51, was first snapped at 4.56am on August 14 last year travelling at 70mph on the northbound carriageway.

Then, on August 27, he was snapped again at 68mph at 4.57am — and again on the same stretch of tarmac four days later on August 31 when he was clocked at 71mph at 4.43am.

Saunderson, of Newington Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, did not attend the hearing but copped three penalty points on his licence and a £40 fine — multiplied by three — after admitting all three offences last week.

Magistrates also ordered him to pay a total of £112 in surcharges to fund victim services plus another £270 in prosecution costs, making a grand total of £502.

Temporary speed limits have been in force on the Northamptonshire stretch of the M1 since work started on a £373million upgrade between Milton Keynes and Daventry in 2019.

The limit was increased from 50mph to 60mph last year after trials showed more motorists staying within the speed limit while saving on average 3,800 hours of journey time compared with the 50mph limit.
