Shoplifters' £450 haul from Northampton Sainsbury's foiled by eye-witness' 999 call

An eye-witness foiled a pair's attempt to get away with a trolley load of meat worth more than £450 from a Northampton supermarket on Thursday night.

Police were alerted by a 999 call from a member of the public who had spotted two people leaving the Sainsbury's store at Sixfields and driving off without paying.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "Two people entered the store in Gambrel Road at around 7pm and filled up a trolley with various goods, including a significant quantity of meat.

"They left without attempting to make payment for the goods but we received a call from a member of the public and the vehicle was intercepted a short time later in Crow Lane.

"Top work by the witness that reported the vehicle to us. Thank you!"

A 36-year-old woman has been given a caution for theft in relation to the incident while a Wellingborough man, 36, will appear in court in January on driving offences including having no insurance.
