Magistrates let a shoplifter escape jail for shoplifting a massive trolley-load of booze from a Northampton supermarket — but told him to pay up £1,800 for the stolen goods.

Sorin Patrascu admitted taking alcohol and razor blades from Asda in Harborough Road on February 8 this year.

Northampton Magistrates Court heard the 22-year-old's haul added up to a whopping £1,834.56.

Patrascu, of no fixed abode was given a 12-week jail sentence suspended for a year — but told to pay back the cost of the booze and razor blades plus another £213 in prosecution costs and a surcharge to fund victim services, leaving him with a total court bill of £2,047.56
