Stunned police officers arrested two suspected drugs dealers after discovering a shopping bag-for-life full of cannabis stuffed in a car boot.

Members of the Northamptonshire Road Crime Team pulled over a black VW Golf in St John's Street, Wellingborough, on Saturday afternoon shortly after Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras alerted police it was a vehicle of interest.

A spokesman for the Force confirmed a search of the vehicle revealed a "significant" quantity of cannabis in a shopping bag.

Two men, both aged 27, were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class B drugs. They have both been released on bail pending further enquiries.

ANPR — automatic number plate recognition — systems use fixed cameras and some mounted on police vehicles to read vehicle plates and instantly check database records to see if they could be stolen or of interest.

Chief Constable Nick Adderley and Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold announced a £1.3million investment in expanding the network of cameras across Northamptonshire to boost the Force's crime-fighting resources.

DCI Steve Watkins said: "Our enhanced ANPR system is delivering real results, denying criminals use of the roads and keeping the public safe through cutting-edge, intelligence-led policing."
