Northamptonshire Police visit schools and carry out knife amnesties in nationwide crackdown on knife crime

Knife crime will be the focus of a week-long campaign in Northamptonshire as police join forces across the UK in a national crackdown.

Throughout the week, officers from Northamptonshire Police will carry out targeted enforcement activity, visit schools and youth groups, and work with communities to raise awareness of the dangers of carrying knives.

Retailers across the county are also being reminded of their legal responsibilities when selling knives, particularly to young people.

Chief Inspector Oliver Charter, who is overseeing the campaign, said tackling knife crime required more than just arrests.

He said: “Knife crime is a complex issue and often involves young people who have become involved in something they can’t see an exit from.

“We know that whilst arresting has its place, it’s not the only solution.”

The force’s Youth Violence Intervention Unit works with young people and families to help steer those at risk away from violence and criminal activity.

Police will also hold knife amnesties during the week, giving people the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted weapons.

Chief Insp Charter added that kitchen knives are commonly used in offences and urged residents to safely dispose of knives they no longer need, while reminding retailers to always check ID before selling knives to anyone aged under 25.
