Northampton man arrested for car interference after PD Walt finds him hiding in footwell

A Northants police dog led to the arrest of a suspect after he sniffed him out and found him in a car footwell.

PD Walt was tasked with finding the male after he was seen trying a number of car doors in Penfold Gardens in Great Billing at around 3am yesterday (May 19).

The intelligent dog found the suspect hiding in the footwell of a car that did not belong to him.

The find led to a 44-year-old being arrested and charged with four counts of vehicle interference and one count of attempted theft from a motor vehicle.

After the arrest, the Northants Police Dog Section tweeted: “PD Walt had a great job overnight where he sniffed out a suspect who had been stealing from parked vehicles.

“Walt tracked him along the street and found him trying to hide in the footwell of a car that definitely wasn’t his! Well done Walt! #TheNoseKnows.”

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police added: “This happened yesterday (May 19) at about 3am in Penfold Gardens when a man was seen to be trying a number of car door handles in the street.

“We deployed with PD Walt who quickly tracked the suspect who tried to hide from him.

"Gary Robert Richards, 44, of Tiptoe Close, has been charged with four counts of vehicle interference and one count of attempted theft from a motor vehicle in connection with the incident.”

Richards was due to appear in Magistrates court today (May 20).
