Drink and drug driving is one of so-called fatal five offences which are the main contributors in collisions alongside careless driving, not wearing a seat belt, excessive speed, and using a mobile phone whilst behind the wheel. Northamptonshire Police arrested 110 motorists on suspicion of drink or drug driving during its annual crackdown which ran from December 1 to January 2.

Detective Chief Inspector Shelley Nichols of the force’s Specialist Operations said: “Although many people are getting better at being more responsible on our roads, there are still some who will try to justify drink or drug driving. However, there is no excuse or validation to behave so selfishly and recklessly. We all have a choice.
“Even the slightest amount of alcohol or drugs in your system can affect the way you drive, which is why our winter campaign focused on highlighting the life-changing consequences attached to drink and drug driving.”
