Man whose body was found in the Nene in Northampton died following '˜tragic accident'

Police have identified the body of a man who was found dead hours after leaving Northampton General Hospital.

Officers had been called out following reports of a body in the River Nene between the Carlsberg factory and Towcester Road just after 9am on Monday.

The force revealed this morning that the man was Aleksas Straksys, who was aged 50.

A spokeswoman said: “Officers believe the death to be a tragic accident and are not treating it as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

Aleksas, a Lithuanian, is known to have left Northampton General Hospital at around 1am on Monday, but was not seen until he was discovered in the water.

Officers are keen to speak with anyone who may have seen him after he left the hospital, and have released a photograph of him.

Aleksas was about 5ft 7ins tall, slim, and usually wore glasses. He was also wearing a black leather jacket over a dark hoodie and tan-coloured shirt.

He had on a black tracksuit bottoms with two stripes down each leg.
