Man who failed to get veterinary treatment for dog's wounds given suspended jail sentence

A man who caused unnecessary suffering to his dog after he failed to take it to a vets following an attack by another dog in Northampton has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Jamie Goss, aged 27, did not take his greyhound called Blackie to the vets after he suffered a shoulder wound when he was attacked by a dog on May 10 last year.

Northampton Magistrates’ Court heard Blackie was seen by RSPCA officers after they were called to Marriott Street in Northampton on May 13.

A vet who examined the dog said Blackie had suffered unnecessary pain as his wounds had become more serious due to the lack of treatment.

Goss, representing himself, claimed he had taken the dog to a vets but could not afford the charge he was quoted for treatment.

Goss, of Great Yarmouth, pleaded guilty to a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

District Judge Tim Daber, sentenced Goss to four weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months. He also disqualified him from owning any animals for five years. He must also pay £250 costs.

Blackie has now recovered and been rehomed by the RSPCA.
