Detectives are investigating how a man who tried to break up a fight outside a Northampton pub wound up seriously injured.

Officers say the scrap was near to the Jeckyll & Hyde in Wellingborough Road at around 12.20am Saturday morning and have issued descriptions of a man in his 20s they want to quiz..

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman added: "A man tried to intervene to separate the involved parties before the dispute continued around the corner in West Street.

"As the victim tried to de-escalate the situation, he was assaulted by a man who caused serious injuries to his ear."

Police described the suspect as a white man in his early to mid-20s, of slender build and with brown hair.
