Man injured trying to free dog from Cane Corso's jaws during Northampton Racecourse attack
A 64-year-old man has been banned from owning a dog after his pets attacked two other dogs on Northampton’s Racecourse.
A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said: “On March 6, 2025, Leyion Charles-Bain, of Military Road, Northampton, was walking two of his Cane Corso dogs on the Racecourse when they attacked two other dogs.
“During the attack, one of the dog’s owners cut his thumb trying to prise Charles-Bain’s dog’s locked jaws from his own dog. He also suffered a slash to his head from falling to the floor during the incident.
“Charles-Bain was charged with having a dog dangerously out of control in a public place and after pleading guilty to the offence, he was sentenced at Northampton Magistrates’ Court on May 26 to a one-year community order,” the spokesperson added.

He was also banned from owning a dog for seven years and all four of his Cane Corso dogs were handed over to the police for rehoming, the spokesperson said.
Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Nikki Brooks said: “This was a distressing incident which has had a significant impact on those who use and enjoy the Racecourse, a space that should be safe for everyone, including responsible dog owners. The behaviour of Charles-Bain’s dogs that day left people injured and understandably shaken.
“I’d like to thank PCSO Rachael Barber, PC Payal Govind and PC Charlotte Johnson for their hard work and dedication in progressing this case and ensuring a positive outcome. Their efforts have helped us secure these restrictions, which will help protect the public and prevent further incidents.
“I would also link to thank the Anti-Social Behaviour Team at West Northamptonshire Council for all their assistance in this case.”
Councillor Charlie Hastie, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at WNC, said: “This outcome demonstrates the strength of partnership working between West Northamptonshire Council and Northamptonshire Police in keeping our communities safe.
“By working closely together, we’ve been able to support a thorough investigation and ensure appropriate action has been taken following what was a very distressing incident.
“Northampton Racecourse is a valued public space that should be safe and welcoming for everyone, and we remain committed to working hand in hand with our partners to respond to incidents like this, take action where necessary, and promote responsible dog ownership across our communities.”
