Man charged with breaking restraining order in attempt to burn down Northampton woman's home, court hears

A man accused of breaking his restraining order and trying to burn down the home of a woman in Northampton last week has appeared in court.

Denny Shury, of no fixed address, was arrested on Tuesday this week after a fire broke out at a woman's home in St Andrews Road on Sunday (May 31).

The 29-year-old is accused of violating his restraining order against the victim before breaking into her home and allegedly setting it ablaze "with intent to endanger life".

In the incident on Sunday, several fire engines were called out to tackle the blaze, which caused substantial damage to the upper floor of the terraced property.

Shury was arrested on Tuesday and charged with arson with intent to endanger life and breaching his restraining order.

In a hearing today (June 3) at Northampton Magistrate's Court, Shury made no plea over the two charges.

The court also heard how the 29-year-old also assaulted a detention officer after he was arrested before breaking a laptop and a damaging a wall while he was being interviewed at the criminal justice centre.

Shury pleaded guilty to assaulting the officer and damaging property.

He was remanded in custody and will appear at Northampton Crown Court on July 1.
