Officers from the Northampton Neighbourhood Team were conducting proactive patrols in the St James' areas nearby when they were alerted to an incident involving a man with a knife.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "We received reports that a man has been seen with a knife at 9am in St James' Park Road.

"Our local officers deployed within minutes and a 34-year-old man has since been charged with possessing a knife in a public place."

Chief constable Nick Adderley introduced neighbourhood policing teams as part of his focus on delivering effective local crime-fighting.

Earlier this year, Mr Adderley confirmed the number of dedicated neighbourhood constables across rural and urban parts of the county will double over the next 18 months.

He said: “In doubling the number of our neighbourhood beat officers over the next 18 months, with more officers coming later in 2023, the vision of a better connected, accessible, visible and contactable police service starts to become a reality.

“I believe that by putting bobbies back on the beat we will provide the right connection and service, a service that the public deserves and quite rightly expects.”
