Police say they received reports that a car had left the carriageway. All emergency services were called.

A Northamptonshire Police spokeswoman said: “When the emergency services arrived, there were no occupants in the car and officers carried out an intensive search of the local vicinity to check that there were no casualties nearby.

“It was established the driver had left the scene and has since spoken to police officers confirming that he is safe and well.”

Police also confirmed the collision was damage only.

National Highways said the road fully reopened again at around midnight. The M45 was also closed eastbound between the A45 and the M1 at J17, to assist the response.
