Northampton Crown Court heard yesterday (July 9) how the 31-year-old reacted to the row by beating her repeatedly.

"But it seems that wasn't bad enough," His Honour Judge David Herbert told the court in sentencing. "Because you proceeded to take her wine glass and thrust it into her face, which smashed it and caused a laceration.

"As she has said in her victim impact statement, she no doubt thought that you were about to kill her."

The court heard how although Childs was "filled with remorse and shame for what he's done".

Judge Herbert said: "Your offending is so serious that only a custodial sentence can be appropriate."

Childs was jailed for 18 months for causing grievous bodily harm.
