Two Northampton men who "mercilessly" kicked and punched two brothers in a drunken rage even after they were both knocked unconscious have been jailed for 14 months each.

Florin Velea, 21, and Cosmin Arsenie, 31 - both from Milton Street North, Kingsley - were both so drunk they don't remember their assaults around midnight on February 5 on St Andrews Road, where they savagely beat two men over the course of nearly 10 minutes.

Their victims were both knocked out by the relentless attacks, but that didn't stop the two housemates from carrying on with the beating and were only stopped by the arrival of police officers.

At their sentencing at Northampton Crown Court on Friday (July 31), CCTV footage of the entire attack was played to Recorder Stuart Sprawson.

He told the pair in sentencing: "Two two of you chose to deliberately and mercilessly cause actual bodily harm to [your victims] over a period of some eight minutes.

"You punched them and you kicked them and one of you employed a headbutt. the attack continued whether they were conscious or unconscious."

The court heard how despite the sustained attacks, the two victims did not sustain lasting injuries, although one of the men suffered a severe injury to a finger.

Recorder Sprawson said: "It is simply good fortune that they did not sustain greater injuries.

"I have heard how both of you have shown remorse and empathy for your victims, and that neither of you remember what you did.

"I have considered whether I can suspend these sentences - but this was a brutal, drunken and prolonged attack for which the two of you are jointly responsible for the injuries caused. It would be wrong for me to deal with you by way of anything other than a custodial sentence."

Both Velea and Arsenie were sentenced to 14 months in prison.
