A man who kicked out at a police officer at Irchester's Gypsy Lane Caravan Park has been handed a prison sentence.

Gerard O'Brien assaulted the officer at about 11pm on January 9 when they tried to arrest him for a separate offence in Gipsy Lane, near Irchester Country Park

The 30-year-old, now of HMP Peterborough, later admitted the assault before magistrates in Northampton.

He denied other alleged offences of assaulting a woman and entering a dwelling as a trespasser with intent to do unlawful damage, with those charges later dropped by prosecutors.

This month magistrates handed him a six-week prison sentence because it "was a deliberate attack on a public servant carrying out public duties".

O'Brien was also told to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £128.
