Police arrested a 15-year-old girl in connection with a brutal mugging in Northampton town centre on Saturday.

A 27-year-old male was also arrested following the attack on a 34-year-old man in Market Square between 5pm and 6pm, just as shops were closing. Both have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Officers revealed the victim was approached by a gang of four people, including a teenage girl and a male wearing a surgical mask.

He was punched in the face and knocked to the ground before having his mobile phone and cash taken, then beaten again — suffering a facial injury — after asking the gang for his phone back in nearby Abington Street.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "We believe both Market Square and Abington Street may have been busy at the time of this incident with many people taking advantage of the warm weather.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and may have witnessed this assault.
