Ex-con back behind bars after spitting at Northamptonshire police officer four months after being freed

A man who was once among Northamptonshire's most wanted criminals is back behind bars after spitting at a police officer.

Daniel Farrant, 28, was jailed last year for burglary after a police campaign to track him down in which he was labelled as one of the force's top 10 most wanted.

He was released from custody in June 2020 — but arrested again just four months later after damaging a woman's red Vauxhall and assaulting two police sergeants.

He spat at one female officer before attacking her male colleague with a large box of Christmas decorations.

Farrant, of Minerva Way, Wellingborough, originally denied criminal damage and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker before changing his plea to guilty at the town's Magistrates' Court.

He also pleaded guilty to a public order offence on October 19 against the woman, in which he caused fear or provocation of violence.

Magistrates decided to jail him as the incident was "so serious because it was an attack on public servants doing their duty".

Farrant was jailed for a total of 22 weeks.

He must pay a total of £400 in compensation to the woman whose car he damaged and must also pay compensation of £50 to each police officer he attacked.

Last year, Northampton Crown Court heard Farrant had clocked up 50 offences in a criminal record that started in the youth courts in 2007 when he was convicted of criminal damage.

His career in criminality continued through 2008 when, aged just 15, he stole a car and drove it.

He then moved to burglary aged 16 before clocking up numerous criminal damage, public order, racially-aggravated violence, robbery, drug possession, driving and assault charges, as well as failing to comply with orders imposed by various courts.
