Drug driver jailed after continuing for miles on M1 near Northampton after crashing into central reservation and damaging car

A drug driver has been jailed after he continued for miles on the M1 near Northampton, following a collision with the central reservation, which damaged his car.

Omar Makhluf appeared at Aylesbury Crown Court on February 6, where he pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving and one count of driving whilst unfit through drugs.

The now 20-year-old was driving northbound on the M1 near Newport Pagnell at around 3.30pm on February 2025 when he collided with the central reservation. According to Thames Valley Police (TVP), Makhluf’s vehicle lost a wheel to the rim, but he proceeded to drive for several miles along the motorway.

A TVP spokesperson added that thankfully no one was injured from Makhluf’s driving, adding: “If you damage your vehicle while driving on a motorway, pull over to the side and alert police as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Investigating officer, James Holmes, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “This incident on the M1 could easily have had far more serious consequences, and we are thankful that no one was injured.

“Makhluf has now admitted his actions in court and has been sentenced. Dangerous driving puts lives at risk, and we remain committed to keeping our roads safe. We encourage everyone to drive responsibly and safely.”

Makhluf, Keel Close, Barking, was sentenced to 22 months in prison and disqualified from driving for four years and 336 days for the 2025 offences, as well as other driving offences elsewhere in the country, according to TVP.
