A drink-driver who all at once crashed into a Northampton house, "floored it" into the owner's car and sped away with a missing tyre has been spared jail.

Zymantas Sadzevicius, of Flaxwell Court, Northampton, also tried to get away from police by careening down along A45 in his damaged car before he was brought to halt by a squad car.

In the early morning incident in November 2019, officers found the 25-year-old behind the wheel with a cigarette in his mouth and an empty bottle of Jack Daniels in the footwell.

Northampton Crown Court heard today (October 15) how police were called after a homeowner on Mapperley Drive - off Lumbertubs Way - was woken up at around 1am by a loud bang.

The homeowner - who thought they were being burgled or having their car stolen - looked out their window to see a black Toyota sticking out of his house extension and Sadzevicius behind the wheel.

Witnesses then said the drunk 25-year-old then "floored it" in reverse and smashed the Toyota into the homeowner's car before driving away.

And, when police arrived and found Sadzevicius on nearby Wilford Road, the 25-year-old tried to escape onto the A45 and swerved to stop the pursuing squad cars getting ahead of him.

However, he collided with a police car and was arrested.

He told officers at the scene and in an interview that the car was actually his mother's and he had gone for a drive in it knowing he was over the limit. He also only had a provisional licence.

In court, Her Honour Judge Rebecca Crane spared Sadzevicius from an immediate jail sentence after hearing he had been grappling with undiagnosed depression

He was handed a 12 month sentence suspended for 16 months. He was also disqualified from driving for three years and will pay £350 in compensation to the Mapperley Drive homeowner.
