A Corby robber fled with just a bottle of cider and a few cigarettes after pointing a knife at a terrified member of the public's throat and frisking him.

Daniel McIntyre left his random victim fearing for his life after robbing him as he walked through the wooded area near the town's swimming pool.

The 26-year-old was on bail at the time after he threatened to cave another man's skull in and stole his motorbike earlier in the year.

On Tuesday (March 2) he was jailed for three-and-a-half years at Northampton Crown Court.

Outlining the Crown's case, prosecutor Luc Chignell described the events of December 15 last year as "rather extraordinary".

McIntyre, of Markham Walk, was walking along a path when he approached his victim who he did not know and pulled a knife out.

He pointed it at his throat, asking what he had with him and demanding his phone before frisking him.

But after missing his victim's phone when he searched him he ended up walking away with just a few cigarettes and a bottle of cider.

Mr Chignell said: "When the knife was pointed to his throat he (the victim) feared for his life."

McIntyre was arrested shortly after the incident and gave no comment answers in interview before being held on remand at HMP Peterborough, where he has been since.

At the time of the robbery he was on bail for a separate incident, which started out with a robbery charge and ended with a guilty plea to theft and affray.

The court heard that, on January 5 last year, McIntyre's victim was at his Dovedale Road home with a Suzuki motorbike, which he had bought for about £1,000 a few months earlier.

McIntyre forced his way into his room at about 11am and searched for the keys, but was unable to get to the bike.

Over the course of about 20 minutes he threatened and intimidated the victim into unlocking the bike for him.

He told him: "I'm taking your bike whether you like it or not."

Mr Chignell said McIntyre threatened to "cave the victim's skull in" before taking the bike and riding off.

The victim eventually got his bike back, but was left scared after the incident.

Mr Chignell said: "He had to be moved from that address because of fears about returning to it."

The court heard McIntyre had 12 convictions for 25 offences including theft, assault and possessing a knuckleduster.

Charges against his co-accused in the January incident, his brother Connor McIntyre and friend Connor Gillespie, 28, were dropped.

Mitigating, Liam Muir said McIntyre had gone into a ridiculous spiral and that his maturity didn't match his age.

He said: "He is someone who the court sees far too regularly.

"His life has no rudder and he gets into drink and drugs."

His Honour Judge David Herbert QC told McIntyre he would spend half of his three-and-a-half year sentence behind bars before being released on licence.

He said: "The (robbery) victim was understandably fearful for his life...he thought he was about to be stabbed."
