Car cruisers caught on camera driving dangerously up and down busy dual carriageway in Northampton

Fed up residents living near a dual carriageway in Northampton have complained to police about car cruisers driving dangerously in the area.

Residents living near Aldi on the A43 in Overstone have captured illegal car cruisers on video going up and down the dual carriageway which has, in parts, got a speed limit of 40mph.

They claim that despite police being called, they fail to turn up in time to catch the drivers. Northamptonshire Police are yet to respond to this claim.

One resident living in the area said: “There are groups of illegal drag racers that meet up at Aldi car park near the A43 and speed up and down round the roundabout and then back again.

“It’s getting more and more frequent and the police seem to do nothing – it took them nearly an hour to arrive as no cars were available apparently.

“A few of the residents have asked for a speed camera to be put in on the 40mph stretch of road to prevent it, but they probably don't use their own plates.”

Residents claim that the car cruising caught on camera went on for around an hour on October 11 at around 10pm before police arrived on scene.

The resident said: “As you can see from the video there are cars going the normal 40mph speed limit the other way while they are speeding past in the other direction.

"Luckily no one was injured but when you hear it you think any minute now you are going to hear breaks skidding and a car smashing in to something.

“It does make you jumpy when you hear a car speeding down the A43 because the first thing you think is they are back again.

“I know we live near a busy road you expect to hear noise but you don't expect that.” In January 2025 West Northamptonshire Council (WNC), in partnership with Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service, announced a crackdown on car cruising.

The West Northamptonshire Council (Car Cruising) Public Spaces Protection Order 2025 came into force in April 2025 and is currently active across all publicly accessible land in the administrative area.

Northamptonshire Police and WNC have been approached for comment.
