A female petrol station shop assistant was assaulted after tackling a would-be shoplifter trying to steal a sandwich in Northampton early on Tuesday morning.

Detectives have issued CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with the incident at the BP garage in St James Road,

The woman confronted the shoplifter but was then attacked before he left the store.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "Between 8.45am and 9am on Tuesday (July 14) a man was challenged by a female member of staff after he had attempted to hide a sandwich in his clothing.

"He assaulted her before being asked to leave.

"Officers investigating the incident believe the man pictured may have information which could assist with their enquiries and are appealing for him, or anyone who may recognise him, to get in touch by calling 101 using reference number 20000360921. Alternatively, if you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
