ANPR helped officers arrest 513 people in 2025 as more than 2,000 vehicles stopped in Northamptonshire

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) helped police officers arrest 513 people in 2025, as more than 2,000 vehicles were stopped across Northamptonshire.

The arrests made included multiple wanted people, including on suspicion of offences such as rape, child sex offences, serious assault, burglary, kidnap, attempted murder, knife crime and stalking.

Northamptonshire Police has a comprehensive ANPR camera network throughout the county, and last year this assisted officers in the stopping of 2,412 vehicles, with 513 arrests being made and 739 vehicle seizures.

Missing people were also found using the cameras including one person who had intentions to end their life. They were safeguarded by officers and taken to a place of safety as a result.

Numerous stolen vehicles and those on false/cloned plates or those found to be committing traffic offences were also stopped and dealt with.

ANPR Manager Jamie Culverhouse said: “In recent years, we have invested significantly in our ANPR network and it’s fantastic to see how many positive results they have helped us to achieve.

“We hope last year’s statistics send a clear message to anyone who might consider coming to Northamptonshire to commit crime - it is not safe for you here and we will bring you to justice.”

Head of Proactive Crime and Intelligence, Detective Superintendent Gan Thayanithy said: “Our ANPR network is a vital strategic intelligence asset which has allowed us to protect more people than ever.

“By acting on real-time vehicle data across our county, we are identifying patterns, disrupting organised criminality, and intervening earlier than ever before to safeguard vulnerable people,” Detective Superintendent Thayanithy added.
