Rapist had makeshift razor blade weapon in HMP Five Wells attack

A Lancashire man who raped a Yorkshire woman has been given a long jail term after an attack on another inmate at a Wellingborough prison.

But in November 2024, while in the Wellingborough jail, the 25-year-old launched a horrifying attack on a fellow inmate.

Ali, formerly of Vincent Road, Nelson, Lancashire, was at Northampton Crown Court on Wednesday (April 1) to be sentenced for grievous bodily harm and unauthorised possession of an offensive weapon inside a prison, to which he pleaded guilty.

He attacked inmate James Fitzsimmons inside the jail on November 10, 2024, using a weapon he had fashioned from razor blades.

Ali was first imprisoned following a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court in December 2023.

The Yorkshire court heard how he raped a woman then left her ‘extremely scared’ when he loitered outside her Doncaster home and then tried, by text message, to persuade to drop the charges against him.

Ali begged her for forgiveness and demanded that she ‘take the case back’ as he desperately tried to avoid prosecution for the rapes. He pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced to five years and 11 months behind bars.

Ali, was incarcerated at HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough, which opened initially as new-style a rehabilitation prison but has more recently housed hundreds of serious sex offenders.

Within a year of his jailing, he had launched the assault on James Fitzsimmons.

He was before Recorder Stuart Sprawson in Northampton for sentence earlier this week.

He was deemed to be a dangerous offender and was given an extended sentence for public protection.

The new sentence, which will run consecutively to the term he is already serving, is made up of six years and six months in prison followed by an extended period of two years and six months which he will serve on licence in the community under supervision. He was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £228. He is not expected to be released until at least the end of 2030.

Ali is now housed in HMP Maidstone, Kent.
