Corby homes evacuated and bomb disposal scrambled after ‘object’ found in street

Shire Lodge residents were pulled from their beds after a suspicious package was found in a street.

Police in Corby have thanked residents for their cooperation overnight after a suspicious object was found in Deben Road overnight.

A soure told the Northants Telegraph that a local person had reported spotting what they believed could be a hand-grenade thrown into long grass. Residents were taken to the Rockingham Forest Best Western while the bomb disposal experts investigated.

Inspector Gaz Court of Northamptonshire Police said: "Officers were called to reports of a disturbance in Deben Road shortly after midnight and were subsequently notified of an unidentified suspicious object that had been located next to a vehicle.

"A cordon was put in place while officers contacted Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and on their advice nearby homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

“The EOD attended a short time later and thankfully the object was found not to be of concern.

"Although on this occasion the object was found not to present any immediate danger, it is important that any suspect item is reported to police so that the emergency services can take the appropriate action.

"Local residents were accommodated in a nearby hotel while the investigations were carried out and I would like to thank them and the hotel staff for their cooperation and support.

“The incident was resolved at shortly after 3am and people were able to return to their homes."
