Charity set up to help bereaved parents by Northampton couple whose baby died aged 10 weeks old

The Northampton parents of a baby that died aged just 10 weeks has set up a charity that aims to provide bereavement support including '˜memory boxes' for other families who have suffered the loss of a young child.

Lauren Coulson and Darryl Winfield, have set up the For Zachary charity, following the death of their son who passed away in July last year after being diagnosed with a rare lung disease that affects baby’s ability to breathe for themselves.

Ms Coulson, aged 23, said she was inspired to set up the charity as, on the day Zachary died, the couple left Northampton General Hospital with only a bag of his clothes.

She said: “Because Zachary was only 10 weeks old we weren’t eligible for any help or any bereavement support.

“All we came home from hospital with was a bag of Zachary’s clothes. I do not want any other family to go through that.

“The bereavement boxes are a really good way of maintaining memories in a positive way.

“We were lucky enough to create a lot of our own memories, but we would like to create the opportunity for creating lasting memories for families who didn’t have the time that we had to arrange things ourselves.“

Ms Coulson said the charity’s first major fund-raising event would be held on February 28.

Ms Coulson and Mr Winfield parents are inviting teams of four to eight people to take part in a race back to Zachary’s grave in Piddington.

The teams will be dropped off at one of two secret locations with a compass and a map, and the aim will be to get back to Zachary’s grave on foot in the quickest time.
