Bringing blockbusters to rural Northamptonshire

Phoenix Community Cinema (PCC) has been awarded a £950 community grant by South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) to support the cost of film screenings within the district.

PCC (formerly Centre Screen Northamptonshire) is a scheme that aims to provide high quality film screenings in areas where cinema might not otherwise be available, working with volunteer promoters in community venues across Northamptonshire and Leicestershire.

Councillor Peter Rawlinson, SNC’s portfolio holder for finance, said: “Many residents often find it difficult to get out and about, so it is great that we at SNC can support a scheme which brings entertainment and the opportunity to socialise, directly to the community.”

By offering affordable tickets and refreshments with little or no transport costs, PCC gives those who might not have the means to go the cinema the chance to enjoy the benefits of a film screening close by.

Screenings are publicised in local areas and are open to anyone.

Promoters work with other volunteers from the community to organise the event, which also allows them to develop skills that can benefit other community schemes.

A wide range of films are available to suit all ages and tastes, and are selected to complement other local activities.

PCC also aims to support the local economy through generating income for local venues and other local businesses such as shops, restaurants and pubs.

Having started in February 2009, the scheme has gone from strength to strength. It now has 13 promoters who organised a total of 98 screenings in 2015 to 2016, attracting over 3,000 attendees.

-Community grants are available to organisations and individuals located in, or associated with the district. A wide range of projects and activities may be eligible for help, both large (buildings and infrastructure) and small (equipment and local schemes).

-The next deadline for grant applications is Wednesday, 31 August 2016.
