Bridge closure in Northampton as workers repair damage caused by car accident

A bridge in Northampton will be shut five days a week for a month as workers carry out repairs.

The Causeway bridge, which connects Billing to Cogenhoe, will be closed from Monday, April 4.

The works consist of two sections of parapet repairs on the bridge and follow a road traffic accident in October last year.

A Northamptonshire County Council spokesman said: “Due to health and safety risks to the workforce and general public, the repairs will be constructed under a full road closure.

“Every effort has been and will be made to limit the disruption to you but, it must be appreciated that some inconvenience will result. It is hoped that this road closure can be tolerated for the duration of the works.”

Closures are expected to last for 20 working days.

Vandalism, as well as the accident, means the repairs are needed.

Requests from local businesses, the council said, meant it has waited until after Easter to avoid impacting on a busy trading period.

The council spokesman said: “The missing section of parapet is becoming unsafe for pedestrians and vehicles in its current state.

“Temporary vertical concrete barriers are in place at the moment as an edge line protection. However, this is only a temporary solution.”

During works there will be “good pedestrian access” and businesses will all be open as usual.

A signed diversion will be in place.
