Auction puts ‘diverse range’ of Great Train Robbery memorabilia under the hammer

A forthcoming auction sale of more 420 items of Great Train Robbery memorabilia have already had ‘huge global interest’, according to the auctioneer in charge of the sale.

The diverse collection features items not only from the actual night of the audacious robbery and the period after where the gang holed up at Leatherslade Farm while Britain’s biggest manhunt got underway in the summer of 1963.

It also features personal items belonging to Ronnie Biggs, Bruce Reynolds and others- many of which were personally signed.

The items being offered for sale at J P Humbert Auctioneers Ltd of Towcester, Northants in a ‘no-reserve’ sale next week where everything must sell.

Jonathan Humbert, managing director, said: “Since the catalogue was published last week, the enquiries have been coming thick and fast with interest from America, Canada, Japan, Australia, Brazil and elsewhere.

“Such is the enduring appeal of this most audacious crime, even 52 years on- people have an unrepeatable opportunity to bid on- and buy some important pieces of British social history. We are expecting a very busy sale,” he added.

Among the items on offer is the throttle lever of the Class 40 locomotive that pulled the mail train which was stopped near Bridego Bridge, some of the items from the actual Monopoly set that the gang famously played with, currency stolen in the robbery and many other important items directly connected with the robbery, the robbers and their personal lives.
