Weston Favell Shopping bosses have warned against planning family trips to its stores this weekend.

Only five of the 60-plus retailers will be open at the Northampton centre with police and staff giving advice over whether trips are necessary and ensuring social distancing is observed.

Tesco will be open 8am to 8pm on Good Friday, 8pm-10pm on Saturday and 8am til 6pm on Easter Monday. All stores are closed on Easter Sunday.

The supermarket giant is reserving time at the start of each day for NHS staff, care workers and the elderly and vulnerable.

Marketing manager Zoe Butler said: "We have had a few issues with whole families coming out to do their shopping and with groups but generally it'd been pretty quiet.

"We are in constant communication with the police and do have officers around the centre.

"People are only supposed to come out for necessities but we make sure we talk to people, find out what they need and ask if they really need it.

"We are trying to take each case as it comes. Obviously, if someone's telly blows up then they need a new telly.

"Similarly with DIY goods. People might think that's not essential but mental health is an important issue at the moment and it's good to have something to do."

Boots, Wilko, Savers and Poundland are also open and each store's hours are available on the Weston Favell Shopping website.
