A 'blue plaque' unveiling ceremony is in the works to mark the spot where a badger fell through the roof of a Superdrug in Northampton.

The clumsy visitor made national news in February after it tumbled through the ceiling of the drug store in the Grosvenor Centre.

Shocked staff watched as the wayward mustelid landed behind the perfume counter before making a mess of the display and hiding under a shelf.

The Chronicle & Echo first broke the story after animal rescuers from Northamptonshire Badger Group got in touch to say they had safely assessed and released her, and soon the entire country had heard about her misadventures.

In the following days, the Grosvenor Centre held a competition to name the visitor, who was soon dobbed "Baffle The Badger".

Now, the shopping centre has announced it is preparing to hold a unveiling ceremony for a plaque outside the Superdrug in Baffle's honour.

The walkway outside the beauty store still also be renamed 'Badger Street'.

Centre manager James Roberts told BBC Radio Northampton: "We've been working in the background to get the blue plaque outside the Superdrug as well.

"We're going to have a few surprises for you. I think we're going to have a little bit more than just a velvet curtain to celebrate Baffle and the cheer she's brought to us all."

The date for the ceremony will be announced at a later date.

In February Baffle was assessed by Northamptonshire Badger Rescue, who assessed she had suffered no lasting harm from her fall and released her into the wild.

It is believed the lost female badger wandered into the shopping centre's ventilation ducts to escape Storm Ciara which had raged in the previous days.

Northamptonshire Badger Group is involved of all aspects of badger welfare across all Northamptonshire and hold records of setts across the county. They are also involved in rescuing badgers, taking them for vet treatment and releasing them. For more information visit their website.
