In pictures: Busy Northampton town centre as 'non essential' shops reopen

Long queues were formed outside Debenhams and Sports Direct

As the country's non essential shops threw open their doors after months of pandemic-induced closures, Northampton town centre was bustling with keen shoppers.

Abington Street was busy and queues were formed outside many shops that opened today (June 15) for the first time in nearly three months.

Some shoppers started queuing for outlets in the town as early as an hour before they opened.

The longest queues were seen outside Debenhams and Sports Direct, as people waited to enter while socially distancing.

Unsurprisingly Primark's reopening also proved popular.

At one point the queue for the budget shop snaked from the front of the store inside the Grosvenor Centre to the centre's entrance in Abington Street where Metro Bank is located.

One mum in the queue for Primark said: "I'm here because I need clothes for my little girl - she's grown so much during the lockdown and you can only get so much from supermarkets."

Stickers on the floor marked where customers could stand two metres apart and marshals let shoppers into the store one family at a time.

Similarly, the Grosvenor Centre has clear signage on display asking shoppers to observe social distancing measures.

Here is what the town centre looked like as life was breathed back into it with the opening of 'non essential' shops.
