Sixty-eight "affordable" apartments being marketed at young professionals, couples and families in Northampton will be ready for occupation before the year is out.

The construction work to convert an old shoe factory into homes, in Countess Road, which overlooks Dallington Brook, began during the pandemic and will be called The Barker Buildings.

A Barker Buildings spokeswoman said the ex-shoe factory was previously a dilapidated and derelict industrial unit, attracting antisocial behaviour and causing safety hazards.

However, The Barker Buildings are now taking the shape of a "stylish" apartment block with private, gated car parking and communal courtyard area, only 10 minutes from Northampton Railway Station.

A spokesman on behalf of the developer said: "The Barker Buildings caters towards the more affordable end of the housing market and our hope is that it offers a cool and contemporary living opportunity to young professionals, couples and families living and working in Northampton.”

The properties are being marketed by Edward Knight estate agents.

An Edward Knight spokesman said: “Over the past few years Northampton has seen some of the most major regeneration in its history and The Barker Buildings will be a wonderful addition to the town.

"The well thought out design of this development feels very local and relevant. Most importantly, the development has retained the best of the past to benefit the future”.

The development has had the roof raised to create "spectacular" ceiling heights, and replaced with fresh slates. It has also been installed with floor-to-ceiling windows, which fill the apartments with natural light. And many of the original characteristics of the building’s facade having been retained, too.

The Barker Buildings spokeswoman added: "Off-plan sales for the studio, one and two-bed flats have already begun in anticipation of a fully-furnished marketing suite being launched in May to welcome prospective purchasers. New homes will be ready for occupation before the year is out.

"As development continues to excel in and around Northampton town, the timing is apt for these apartments to hit the market. "
