Take a look around a cool new rooftop bar complete with extensive views of Northampton

The rooftop is heated and a canopy will be added so it can be used in winter months

A popular local bar has opened a new rooftop area, with Ibiza vibes and extensive views across Northampton.

Bosses at Jimmy’s Sports Bar in Harlestone Road, St James, which opened around 18 months ago, were keen to add a garden to the establishment.

Expanding upwards was the best option, so they decided to create a rooftop for customers and also for private functions, as well as yoga classes.

Owner Harry Barnes, who got a lot of inspiration for the rooftop from London venues, was also keen to add something to the local area that is completely different and away from the norm.

Siobhan Marden, manager of the bar, said: “We didn’t have a garden and that was one of the things that stopped people coming here.

“And nobody can go abroad this year so we wanted to bring that here.”

During the pandemic, it may have been difficult to expand a business within the hospitality industry, but Harry believes it has helped the rooftop become a success.

He said: “I think opening it during the pandemic has worked in our favour, with everyone being urged to be outside, we now have a great option for that.

“You just wouldn’t expect to walk in and see a rooftop in St James, or Northampton, so it’s nice to see that surprise on people’s faces.

“I hope it cheers people up a little as I think it was needed as it’s all doom and gloom at the moment.”

Since the rooftop opened last month, it has made the bar even more popular, particularly with the special events that have been held in the spot that boosts views of iconic Northampton buildings such as the New Life, Sol Central and the Holy Sepulchre.

“It has been going really well and we have seen a lot of new faces since the rooftop opened,” Siobhan continued.

“We’ve had a few private events up there and a brunch that went really well, so we are hoping to do more of them.”

Harry added: “In the winter months we will put a canopy up there. It is all heated so we will turn it into a winter wonderland so it can be used all year round.”

With current coronavirus measures in place, it is advisable to book before heading to Jimmy’s.
