Massive queues as McDonald's reopens Northampton's drive-thru restaurants today

Five drive-thru restaurants have reopened again in the town after being shut for ten weeks

McDonald's started taking orders at 11am this morning at Weston Favell, Riverside, Kettering Road, Sixfields and St James Retail Park.

The reopening of some restaurants has seen long queues of cars building up - with cars at the Sixfields site stretching onto the Cineworld car park.

Workers at Sixfields wearing face masks have been pictured in hi-vis vests holding up placards, which display the menu to cars waiting beyond the McDonalds car park.

Perspex screens have been installed at the drive-thru windows and all employees will be wearing protective equipment to keep customers in their cars safe.

The restaurants have returned with smaller teams, a limited menu and will be operating at reduced hours - prompting McDonald's bosses to ask burger-hunters for patience.

For those visiting drive-thrus, customers can only pay by contactless payment or they have the option to browse the menu, order and pay ahead using the My McDonald’s app.

Other drive-thrus in Northamptonshire have also opened at Wellingborough, Corby, Kettering, Towcester, Daventry, Rothwell and Raunds but all town centre outlets without drive-thrus are still closed.

McDonald’s is working closely the police, who may determine that it is necessary to close drive-thru lanes if queues cause disruption at busier sites or put employees or customers at risk.

Don't forget, local takeaways are continuing to be open for business in and around Northamptonshire. You can check out our latest list of eateries HERE.
