The landlord of a Northampton neighbourhood gastro pub has reassured his locals that the new bright orange awnings outside his premises does not mean a new owner has taken over.

In the last week, several Chronicle & Echo readers contacted the paper asking if anything had changed at The County Tavern in Abington.

The concerns came after customers spotted an eye-catching new set of orange awnings over the pub's doors and windows, advertising that the Tavern was now called the "2Twenty".

It led a few readers to worry their favourite local - which has traded for years next to the County Cricket Club grounds - had changed hands during the lockdown.

Now, owner Damien Mullen wants to reassure patrons the County hasn't gone anywhere - and they'll be back open this Thursday.

'It's just a bit of redecorating," Damien told the Chron.

"We had the idea before lockdown to freshen up the front of the pub.

"The new name, '2Twenty at the County', is because our address is 220 Abington Avenue and it works in a bit of cryptic fun for all our cricket fans.

"We'll be open again for business this Thursday."
