Applicants, A & D Mini Market, have submitted a planning application to transform a disused four-storey high street bank into a cafe and apartments.

The bank, on the corner of Drapery and part of the All Saints Conservation Area, used to be a Nationwide branch before it closed down last year and relocated to the former Select shop in Abington Street. The new proposal would see the ground floor become an area for diners to eat and drink while construction work is planned to take place to create a mezzanine floor for additional seating.

The clients purchased the property back February before submitting the planning application in June.

Aside from establishing an independent business on the ground floor they also hope to convert the upper floors into six apartments.

Planning officer David Trubshaw said in a letter that he has no objections to the proposal.

"The conversion of the upper floors to flats is an appropriate use that will secure a viable future for the vacant floors of an attractive and significant building within the town centre."
